The Private Security Indusrty Act (2001) demands that security operators and staff are trained to meet the Security Industry Authority's (SIA) government standard. British security companies and staff within the industry are now obliged by law to meet these regulatory requirements, as a minimum standard.

It is worth noting that government is extremely likely to extend the remit of the SIA to cover companies currently managing their own security requirements 'in house'. It is extremely likely that all security officers will have to hold an appropriate SIA license to be able to work.
